So Verrick did come by before the end of the book. I’m at 62K at this point so there is still a little time for Mila to show up, but surprisingly Verrick wanted to single Kat out. I wasn’t expecting that. I was expecting them to all converge, maybe fight, scream at him to get out, then threaten him.
Julian has. But then Verrick thought he’d have some fun with Kat. Only she realizes that it’s a show. He is literally putting on a show because maybe that’s what they expect to see of him. After all, as much as he too comes across as sometimes immature and not really someone to pay attention to, that’s just not the real Verrick.
Verrick is incredibly intelligent and knows exactly what people expect of him. Personally I feel that he may have wanted Kat alone for a moment to, in some ways, have a minute with Kylarra. You know? Kat is her mother. Kylarra takes after her in many ways. Verrick even mentioned the eyes. Kylarra has her mother’s eyes and the freckles across the bridge of her nose and tops of her cheeks.
Again, I didn’t expect him to say anything like that, but Verrick knows–sort of–what happened to Kylarra. So why really did he come by the mansion? That’s going to be the question. I only remembered just now that he knows what happened. In my notes, I didn’t remember.
So it’s almost as if he went to the King and Queen because he knows who they are. Knows if anyone can help him, it’d be them, but I suspect he’s not going to reveal the real reason he came.
I’m still a bit perplexed to that whole situation. I know some beginning writers may at this point be like, “plot point error! DANGER down that road!!!” as I should know – I was one. Now, after having written a ton of stories in which those random tidbits finally connected down the line and worked out really perfectly, I’m not too concerned.
More like: this has zero connection or reason for it, but I’m going with it. I remember Holly Lisle answering that question from one of her readers. They’d ask about those tiny bits that randomly appear in a story which seem to have no meaning. Now, let me disclaimer – this is for series. If this were a standalone story, then it better darn well have a finish line at the end of the book. I can’t leave it hanging like that.
But this is a series. And as Holly says: Leave them alone. Leave them in. Exactly. Right now I have NO idea why Verrick would come to the King and Queen’s home.
Sidenote: I think I need to get a new keyboard for my laptop. This one is beginning to act up. Yeesh. I have to bash the delete button. Or the end button.
Even though I have zero idea right now of what Verrick is up to, he is up to something. Whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing? Won’t know until he decides to tell the reason for coming. I love the picture on this post. Found it on pixabay.com and it looks exactly like how he showed up in front of Julian and Kat when Cage hauled him inside the house. Cage hasn’t even mentioned how he came across Verrick. So that’s gonna have to get covered.
Still lots to go in this story before it’s handed over to Mila and Stefan in the next story – Discovery of an Enchantress. I say lots to go, but in truth, less than 20K words will be done and that may finish in just about a week or two.
I know one thing though: Verrick needs to stop thinking he can play with Kat. She will tear his throat open.
I was entertained by the fact that he attempted to be a snot face and Kat didn’t even think about turning the “mom” look on him. To which Verrick snapped his mouth shut. Entertained me because it showed right there the type of character Verrick is. He has problems with men having authority over him (his dad was a total jerk to him and used to beat him) but Verrick loved his mother. Like, loved. Then Kat turns on the mom look and he behaves himself? It was a tiny moment, tiny thing, but it revealed his character. He wasn’t all, “you can’t tell me what to do woman!” He was actually more like, close the mouth and obey without question. All Kat did was look at him.
Okay, then right after she said if he wanted her to talk to him then he needed to stop with the games. Verrick complied. Oh Verrick, you revealed who you really were to Kat. Because if there is anyone who would pick up on that tiny little not-even-a-full-second move?
It’s Kat.
