“All the world loves a clown” Cole Porter/cite>
(Maybe the world does…but they just give me the heebie jeebies!)
You know why all the world loves a clown? (Except for me, that is) It’s because everyone loves to laugh. And you want to know why? Because laughter makes us feel good and often really IS the best medicine. For years researchers have been discussing the overall health benefits that laughter can have. It lowers stress. It can improve our memories. It protects against heart disease and even helps us to burn calories. Did you know that just 10-15 minutes of laughter a day can burn up to 40 calories? That’s about 8 pretzel sticks, 4 jellybeans or 6 pieces of candy corn. Hey, not bad for a good belly laugh, now is it?
But besides the physical benefits, having a sense of humor also has emotional benefits, too. It can give us the coping skills we need to deal with the worst that life can throw at us. The ability to find some kind of happiness….. some kind of inner joy….. even when it seems there is none to be found, is one of the greatest gifts we can possess. It helps to make life bearable. It helps us to keep our sanity. And just like a pack of gum…..laughter is best when it can be shared with someone else.
…and I sure hope you have enough to share with the whole class!
Maybe those freaky scary clowns (the things of my childhood nightmares) serve a worthwhile purpose afterall. For there is no greater gift that you can give to someone then to lighten their load a bit and make them forget there problems, even just for a little while.
….But if you should happen to have nightmares afterwards….don’t say I didn’t try to warn you about those freaky clowns!
A dear friend of mine once told me that every morning when she wakes up, she has the choice to be happy or sad…and she always chooses to be happy, regardless of what is going on in her life or around her. Sounds easy enough but for some of us…maybe even most of us….its not something that comes natural. It’s a conscious choice that we need to make. We can choose to look at what gets us down in life as a defeat….or we can look at it as a chance to show the world our best…and do so with a smile. You really can’t ask for more of a sweeter victory than that!
In the end… life is what we make of it….so why not choose to make it happy?
And on that note….I wanted to try my hand at “making ‘em laugh” (without the help of a red rubber nose and oversized shoes thankyouverymuch!) So while I was in a particularly goofy mood….I decided to ponder “The Evolution of Breakfast Cereal” and grabbed my camera as I did. So…are you ready to share my morning musings and porridge ponderings? Well grab your bowl and Fruit Loops and let’s get started!
Until next time, guys! Ta ta and toodles!
